Medical-legal partnership at San Francisco General Hospital, starting Fall 2008. By having an attorney physically located at the pediatric clinics, patients will have access to the legal help they so often need with issues such as substandard or unsafe housing, public benefits, and special education plans. The SFMLP will also train residents on topics related to the social determinants of health. We hope to help the next generation of pediatricians to be empowered and informed to refer patients to the appropriate resources.

I worked to write, advocate for the passage, and strategize for the implementation of SB 1469 which makes it now mandatory in the state of California to enroll eligible youth into MediCal prior to release from detention. I also worked to create a partnership between San Francisco Juvenile Hall (S.P.Y.) and San Francisco General Hospital Primary Care Clinic in order work towards the establishment of a system by which youth exiting juvenile detention will have a PMD appointment at the time of discharge. In conjunction with faculty collaborators, I worked to establish a juvenile detention health curriculum within the UCSF Pediatric residency program. Finally, I worked to research barriers to the establishment of medical homes for youth exiting detention with the goal of better understanding strategies by which physicians can work to establish medical homes for this often overlooked pediatric population.
