The documentation process to the SOC for Year 3 is critical as it forms the basis for the final SOC approval of adequate scholarly activity required for approval to apply for ABP subspecialty board. There are 3 distinct but related activities between fellows, their respective SOC and program directors: (1) The final IDP submission packet; (2) Oral Presentation at Research Day); and (3) the personal statement and work product for the ABP to be submitted for consideration for eligibility to sit for the subspecialty boards submitted to the SOC.
|
- Individual Development Plan updated
- Curriculum Vitae updated
- ABP Scholarly Activity/Work Product Abstract
- Any work product related documents (manuscripts, abstracts submitted to meetings, significant reports, etc.)
- SOC signature sheet (will not be considered complete unless all required signatures are obtained including from the program director, research and career mentor(s)
- Each fellow’s SOC and Program Director are responsible for approving the fellow’s eligibility to sit for the sub-specialty board. The approved packet is then sent to the
central ABP office for final approval. It is important for each fellow to understand the ABP approval process is largely done at the local level as of 2004.
- The final packet is due to the SOC office unless there is a prior approval for a different submission date. The requirements are outlined in detail below.
|
- 15 minute power point presentation (including 5 minutes for discussion with SOC) on the work product topic, hypothesis, methods, results, limitations, conclusions and next steps to be presented at Research Day to the SOC and other attendees in the format of PAS oral presentations sessions. Three simultaneous oral presentations are run representing the 3 distinct SOC fellow slates.

- Overall Career Goals
Tips:
- My long-term career goal(s) is…
- To reach this goal I became a XX clinical fellow and pursued my scholarly activity in the lab of XX mentor or working with the research team of XX mentor.
- Overview of your scholarly work product activity
Tips: Give an overview of your scholarly activity that includes a brief description of your goals and objectives, an outline of the actual project/methodology, and your key findings. Your last IDP abstract of your scholarly activity from year 3 (updated) can serve as a model for this part. Just restate the information in a narrative format.
- My scholarly work product focused on testing the hypothesis or describing the following creative activity (put goals, aims, hypothesis here).
- My project used the following populations, methodology, etc. (put your narrative description of the populations/methods, etc. here using your last SOC abstract as the basis for the information.
- Summarize findings
- Include role in each of the components of the project
- Development of the hypothesis/idea for project
- Development of the design with mentor(s) – name mentor(s)
- Execution of all the work, experiments, program development, etc.
- Analysis and interpretation of all of the data
- Preparation of scientific abstracts, presentations at scholarly regional/national meetings, manuscripts, comprehensive reports, curricula etc. that is or forms the basis for the final work product
- Products related to work product of scholarly activity include: List any abstracts, presentations at scholarly regional/national meetings, manuscripts/papers, etc.
- The scholarly activities related to the development and completion of work product relate to my own career plans in the following ways…
- Additional training activities: Describe other skills and knowledge acquired during training that may not have been covered in the description of your work product above, e.g., list career development activities and state specific conferences (e.g., grant writing, how to write a manuscript), attending workshops and talks at scientific meetings, TICR, , etc.
- Work product of scholarly activity: Attach your work product document and include a formal Cover Sheet with
- Title of project
- Type of project that fulfills the ABP guidance for scholarly activity
- Mentors

Scholarly activities must be hypothesis-driven. Examples of scholarly activity acceptable to the ABP include, but are not limited to: basic, clinical, or translational biomedical research; health services research; bioethics; education; and public policy. Involvement in these scholarly activities must result in the generation of a specific “work product”. The review of scholarly activity will occur at the institutional training level by the SOC.
Please refer to:
UCSF SOC Overview of ABP Training Requirements for Subspecialty Certification
The types of scholarly work product activities that are approved the ABP include (see website):
- Peer-reviewed publication in which a fellow has played a substantial role
- In-depth manuscript describing a completed project
- Thesis or dissertation written in connection with the pursuit of an advanced degree
- Extramural grant application that has either been accepted or favorably reviewed
- Progress report for projects of exceptional complexity, such as a multi-year clinical trial
|
Year 3 oral presentations to their SOC will be given upon completion of subspecialty training, and will be part of the submission requirements of their personal statement and work product. Year 3 oral presentations will be given at the annual Department of Pediatrics Research Day.

Approval for subspecialty certification is a joint process by each fellow’s program director and the SOC. Both must concur upon the qualifications before the fellow can apply for subspecialty certification to the ABP. The program director is responsible for approving the overall qualifications and certifying that the fellow has adequately completed all requirements of the subspecialty board. The SOC is responsible for approving the adequacy of the fellow’s scholarly activity/work product using ABP guidelines.
Year 3 fellows will have a confidential exit interview scheduled in the last quarter of their fellowship by the Office of Medical Education, School of Medicine. The SOC, with input from the fellow’s individual program director, are responsible for certifying the fellow as eligible to sit for the subspecialty ABP boards at the completion of fellowship training.
