Scholarship Oversight Committee

Purpose Statement

The Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) was developed and implemented to meet the requirements for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) board certification for the Department of Pediatrics regarding all ACGME fellows appointed on and after July 1, 2004.

Goal

The SOC serves as the review committee that provides the structure for a formal annual review for each fellow of their progress during their years of fellowship. Specifically, the SOC evaluates the fellows progress as it relates to ABP scholarly activity, meets with the fellow early in training and regularly thereafter, requires the fellow to present/defend the scholarly activity project, advises the program director on the fellows progress, and assesses whether the fellow has satisfactorily met the guidelines established by the ABP in order to qualify to apply for subspecialty board certification at the completion of fellowship. The review will include the completion by each fellow of their Individual Development Plan (IDP), curriculum vitae, and work products of scholarly activity.

Upon completion of subspecialty training, the ABP requires verification from the subspecialty training program director and by the SOC that the clinical and scholarly activity requirements have been met. The ABP also requires that the individual who has completed training submit to the ABP a comprehensive document describing the scholarly activity that includes a description of the individuals role in each aspect of the activity, and the work product.

Structure

The SOC is comprised of all departmental fellowship program directors and members of the Professional Development Committee. The SOC members are subdivided into four subcommittees of approximately 5 faculty members (at least two outside fellows subspecialty divisions), each representing physician and clinical educator scientists. The fellows program director may serve as the fellows mentor and participate in the activities of the oversight committee, but is not a standing voting member of the fellows SOC committee. The SOC Chair will oversee and mediate each review. An administrator will be present to take minutes and document each review.

Review Process

Annual reviews of Year 1 fellows will take place in the last quarter of their first year of fellowship. A follow-up review will be held in the Fall during the start of Year 2. Year 3 fellows are required to submit their IDP in the last quarter of their fellowship as part of their exit interview. Formal reports from the SOC summarizing the review are generated and copies sent to each fellow, the fellows program director and each member of the fellows SOC.
