![]() Fellowship and Training Programs The Division of General Pediatrics specializes in teaching the fundamentals of pediatric care to all pediatric residents and medical students. Both students and residents spend time working in our various clinics, hospitals and community sites. We provide a broad clinical education that prepares our graduates for careers in primary care, child advocacy or further specialized training. In addition, our division faculty coordinate a number of special programs that provide opportunities for more in-depth exposure to areas of interest within general pediatrics. Vist the UCSF Pediatric Residency Program for more information.
Resident Training: Primary Care Track Primary Care Pathway
Physician In Society (PIS) Rotation
Pediatric Leaders for the Underserved (PLUS) Program
Rotation at Bayside Pediatrics Bayside Medical Group is a network of nine private primary care offices, mostly pediatrics, in the San Francisco East Bay. Bayside is well known for its high quality standards, innovative practice techniques, and service to all socio-economic and ethnic sectors of the East Bay.
This rotation will introduce the resident to primary pediatrics in a “real world” setting with mentoring from selected Bayside pediatricians. The program will take place in our offices in Oakland, Berkeley, and Pinole. The heart of the rotation will be the resident seeing patients in the office and presenting selected cases to the faculty preceptor. The resident will also accompany Bayside pediatricians on newborn rounds at Alta Bates Hospital, and occasionally on rounds at Children’s Hospital Oakland. Residents can receive additional training in organizing for quality care, integrating anticipatory guidance and patient education into practice efficiently, integrating teamwork into practice, coding and billing, and the general approach to management in a practice.
The Rotation can be tailored to the time requirements of the resident. Those interested can find out more about Bayside at baysidemed.com. Inquiries should be emailed to Dr. Perlman at jperlman@berkeley.edu. General Pediatrics Fellowship Program The General Pediatrics Fellowship Program has been training academic general pediatricians for the last two decades. The fellowship is a two-year training program designed to provide General Pediatrics Fellows with health services, clinical and epidemiologic research training, as well as an overview of child health issues. The goal of the General Pediatrics Fellowship Program is to prepare clinician-researchers and clinician educators for a career in academic pediatrics. The program provides opportunities for research collaboration with mentorship from UCSF faculty, opportunities to present research at regular forums, and opportunities for clinical teaching and care. New Programs Under Development Given the ever-changing nature of medicine and healthcare, the General Pediatrics Division encourages innovative educational programs in order to better prepare our residents and students. In that spirit, we are currently developing two new programs. The Complementary Medicine Pathway will allow residents interested in complementary approaches to health an opportunity to work with faculty at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. For those interested in advanced training in hospital-based pediatric care and administrative leadership, our faculty are currently developing a Pediatric Hospitalist Fellowship Program that will develop the clinical training required for being a skilled hospitalist and provide scholarly training in key areas of physician leadership within hospitals and academic medical centers.
