Intensive Care Nursery Follow-Up Program

tripletsThe Follow-Up Program at UCSF was developed by Dr. William Tooley in 1964. It was set up to closely monitor the outcome of infants who had been exposed to pioneering advances in perinatal medicine. The UCSF ICN was among the first to provide mechanical ventilation for premature infants, as well as to care for infants who suffered from erythroblastosis fetalis and who required intrauterine transfusions.

Time and technology have brought changes, and the focus of the program expanded over time to the neurodevelopmental follow-up of high risk infants: infants with significant prematurity and infants with significant medical/surgical conditions requiring developmental surveillance over the first few years.
