Childhood leukemia is a focused area of international research excellence at UCSF. Ben Braun, MD, PhD, Michelle Hermiston, MD, PhD, Mignon Loh, MD, and Kevin Shannon MD are pediatric hematologist/oncologists who lead independent research laboratories that are investigating the causes of leukemia, mechanisms of hematopoietic growth control and leukemogenesis, treatment response and resistance, and novel experimental strategies. These studies are conducted in human cells and mouse models. There is an outstanding record of training physician/scientists with many recently receiving Mentored Career Development (K08) awards. The group is highly collaborative and benefits from a collegial research environment at UCSF and from resources and interactions through the Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Program in Hematopoietic Malignancies. We have been fortunate to attract research funding from many sources including the NCI, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Concern Foundation for Cancer Research, and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and from generous donors such as the Frank A. Campini Foundation, Roma and Marvin Auerback, and the Jeffrey and Karen Peterson Family Foundation. |
